G.W.Cox Construction Ltd. has been in
business in Southern Alberta since 1954. What
started out as one man and a gravel truck has
evolved into a major Construction/Earthworks business
with a core staff of long time employees. G.W.Cox
Construction has been in business for over 50
years!
1950's
Gary W. Cox moved to Raymond where he met Constance
Alberta Mehew. They were married June 10, 1952.
Gary worked construction. The building of the
St. Mary's Irrigation system was in progress and
he ran Scraper and Dozer on projects like the
Cross Coulee Dam south of Raymond. One of his
favorite job's was working at the Sugar Factory,
first as a sample chaser at the lab then later
as one of the youngest Beet End foreman Rogers
ever had.
In 1954, with the help of two finance companies,
Gary bought his first Gravel Truck. Over the next
ten years, Darrell, Cheralin, Stuart and Richard
were born, and then GW had to really work, and
haul gravel he did.
1960's
When the Sixties came GW bought more gravel trucks.
In 1964 he bought one of the first tandem axle
gravel trucks which he picked up in Oshawa and
drove home with other new trucks in tow. This
truck was used for gravel hauling in the summer
and set up for car hauling in the off season.
Gary hauled for His Uncle Howard at Melchin Transport,
picking up cars in Oshawa for delivery in Alberta.
GW formed an alliance with Richard Hetke and
Irvin Duncan. Cox Hetke Duncan Trucking in 1967
acquired the first large scale contract to haul
sugar beets from the beet dumps to the Taber sugar
factory. Gary's experience at the sugar factory
paid off. The trucks hauled around the clock proving
that trucking could be an alternative to rail
cars.
In 1969 G.W. Cox Construction became a Limited
Company.
1970's
During the Seventy's GW Cox changed the focus
of his company to Excavating, and with his wife,
Constance Alberta Mehew as his partner the business
grew.
1980's
In the early Eighties the big move from Church
Avenue in Raymond to Lethbridge was accomplished.
In 1980 Cox Construction purchased the land and
moved the operation to the Lethbridge Industrial
area at
1210 31 Street North.
1990's
GW Cox Construction continued to expand and got
involved in Earthworks Projects
